This is the first time the award has been granted by the organization, and it honors professors who have made substantial contributions to student mentoring during their educations careers and after graduation. Pretes received the award at the SEDAAG meeting in Wilmington, N.C. "This award is a strong statement of Dr. Pretes' commitment to student mentorship and student success in school and after graduation," said Dr. Sara Lynn Baird, Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. "That the inaugural Excellence in Undergraduate Mentoring Award by the South East Division of the Association of American Geographers was given to Dr. Pretes is a significant honor and a testament to his dedication to his students." Pretes also serves as the President of the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers, of which he was elected in 2018. His election is the first in 84 years in which the organization's vice president was then elected as president, all while living outside of the region.
